About us

Welcome to Nurture @ Academy. Our founders Michelle and Audrey are experienced hairstylists and assessors working in the industry for over 25 years. They have achieved TCI training and Trauma training to understand, support and be proactive around presenting behaviours that may occur and to really connect with the young people who are referred to the Academy.

We believe that talent deserves a chance to shine. As a social enterprise, our mission is to support disadvantaged young people in building successful careers in hairdressing. Through hands-on training, mentorship, and industry experience, we help aspiring professionals develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive.

Our mission

To empower young people to be confident and skilled for joining the workforce and gaining employment.

Our programmes

Our programmes offer a mix of practical skills, industry knowledge, and personal development, ensuring every learner gains the confidence and experience they need to thrive.

We offer a range of courses, from beginner workshops to advanced training, covering everything from cutting and styling to beauty treatments. More than just skills, we provide a supportive environment where young people can grow, connect, and take their next steps with confidence.

Who we are

I have over 25 years experience of being a hairdresser. After leaving school I started Dundee College for a year’s Nc course in Hairdressing, from there I applied for a trainee position where I gained in-house training from experienced stylists,  Later on I became the owner of my own Salon ; it was myself that would give in house training to my staff. I  moved to Glasgow where I returned to Education to complete a HNC in hairdressing.

I applied for a trainer’s position in a private training provider,  I then completed my assessors award allowing me to assess candidates. It was during this time the idea of Nurture @ Academy developed. I felt there was a gap for young people that maybe couldn't achieve a level 2 or 3 yet.  I  went through some training in Trauma, child protection, ADHD, CSE this gave me a better understanding about the young people’s needs. I also worked as a residential worker and still do some bank work . This gives me more experience with working with young people.

I still love hairdressing and seeing how it can change someone's appearance and mood, getting your hair done always makes you feel great.

On leaving school in 1996 I was employed & trained in-house within a well known established salon. Over the years I gained a great passion to teach hairdressing & with over 25 years' experience I returned to college. In 2009 I achieved an HNC in Hairdressing, following this I have been actively working within the Hairdressing industry . During which time I have gained a very broad understanding and built up my knowledge and understanding both during my college course and my working time within the salon environment. Due to being a highly motivated individual I thrive to ensure that my knowledge is increased which assisted and enabled me to then further educate myself to achieve an L3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) in 2017, followed by gaining a level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (RQF). This has shown that I can thrive to achieve and meet my own personal goals leading to my desired interest to move into a teaching role. Within the past 2 years to enable my passion building Nurture @ Academy  & working with disengaged young people who have barriers preventing them from gaining a positive destination.

I have completed TCI, child protection, ADHD, CSE training to allow myself to have a better understanding. I am currently actively working within residential -  on bank to allow myself to continue to learn and develop an understanding to allow our young people to thrive.
